The recently described mineral luftite, composed of nitrogen, oxygen, argon and traces of other elements, has the lowest density of any mineral at room temperature. With the approximate formula N(78)O(21)Ar it also has the lowest melting and boiling points of any known mineral, becoming a gas at temperatures greater than -150 degrees Celsius.

Luftite has been proposed for use in party balloons as a cheaper alternative to helium. Since its discovery there are reports of teenagers engaging in 'Luft-sniffing' parties, prompting the Government to propose listing the mineral as a controlled substance, which would be available only by prescription or at state-controlled stores.

What is particularly alarming is that the German Airforce actually used luftite during WWII, in attacks on both military and civilian targets. There is also evidence that several terrorist organizations are using luftite!

I used to play frisbee with circular saw blades. In the dark. Also my brother and I used to see who could take the most pain: among the challenges were eating raw cocoa powder, eating raw cinnamon powder, chewing vitamin pills (the non-chewable kind), balancing all our weight on a saw horse using only our knuckles, zapping ourselves repeatedly on streetlight transformers using a 9-volt and collapsing the field, firewalking, swordfighting with PVC pipe and this 6 foot-long metal yard stakes, etc etc.

Unfortunately that is all *true* so maybe I shouldn't have put it here.

*There IS a 'Leave a Random Fact' thread, you know*

As my mother used to say: "A place for everything, except that bottle of acid you have in the basement that gives off red fumes when you open it, which should go someplace else, like RIGHT NOW, and I don't care if you need it to strip the silver coating off your telescope mirror."

I'm sorry, but those are true facts too.
If you two continue to post true facts on this thread, according to BAUT rules you will be sent to Siberia where you will be forced to clean up penguin poop.

Nice present for friends left in the dark

    Build an octagonal box.

Place highly reflective first-surface mirrors on each internal face of the box.

Insert a stroboscope and let it flash just once.

Carefully wrap the box and mail it to your closest friend north of the arctic circle during the darkest part of winter.

Imagine the look on his face when he receives your gift!

The term "jam session", meaning an impromptu jazz concert, was first used in 1917 by a group of jazz musicians from Topeka, Kansas, who used empty jelly jars during their performances.

NYET! According to the Bureau of Information Statistics and Factual Action Committee, persons sent to Siberia this year will be having to deal with the sudden, unexplainable population boom possibly caused by the threads with more than 42 posts.

No Mike Serbia is the main producer of the Volvo and SAAB cars, they have the most highly developed infrastructure and up-to-date technology.

Unfortunately, that infrastructure and technology was developed for the production of ceramic plates and is of no use in the manufacture of cars. Volvos are still produced by hand, carved from individual blocks of steel.

Actually, the use of steel was a more recent development. The name Chevrolet is derived from the French, chevre...in hommage to the cars originally hand carved from aged goat cheese by Alsatian craftsmen. It bears noting that modern new car smell is said to be a pale imitation of the genuine article.

The now extinct dwarf Ecuadorian sea lion is believed to have been able to survive depths of up to 2000 m for hours at a time. Since specimens have only been found in bromeliads and other phytotelmata in the rain forest canopy, it is believed that the species died from embarassment for not living up to its potential.

When the rain hasn't fallen for quite some time and a drought has occurred, stripping down to your bear flesh and painting crude colourful pictures over your entire body, back combing your hair into a wild look, screaming , singing and dancing waving an umberella in one hand and a bowl in the other up a busy street will stop the drought and rain will follow straight after.
You won't be arrested for indecent exposure since your covered in paint and looking like a beautiful being this will also give cause for admiration and a monument will be put in the middle of the town square for saving them from almost living in desert conditions digging for water sources.

I'm sorry, I don't quite understand the details of this procedure. You don't happen to have any photos, or maybe a video, to demonstrate the process?

The Tasmanian Dartwing has the shortest adult life span of any known insect. After spending 12 years as a larval dartwing (under the bark of the Barra Berry Bush), it dies and then, turns into an adult dartwing. Its average life span as an adult is minus 93 minutes.

Attacks by Giant Flying Vampire Toads (actually tree frogs instead of true toads) claim the lives of 2-3 golfers in the American Southeast each year. Golf course owners in this region have learned the habits of the frog so well, they are at least able to choose the victims in advance.
