    The radio telescopes at ALMA

    Hi everyone,

Why are the radio telescopes at ALMA spaced in such an apparently haphazard way?

I know they can be moved about for wide and narrow-angle results, but in wide field photos of the site, they seem to be randomly situated all over the place!

    Why is this?

    Thanks in advance!!!

I am not certain, but I understand that for radio interferometry to work best you need a diversity of distance ratios between the many antennae. A regular pattern produces an image with more aliasing.

Yes and some of the larger patterns are also just allowing for the terrain.
