Saharan Air Layer approaching US - prepare for redder-than-usual sunsets and sunrises

If you've been tracking the news you'll know that a particularly thick layer of Saharan Dust is sweeping over the Atlantic towards North America. Right now the dust is over the Caribbean and is causing very hazy skies and some bronchial problems for people more sensitive to pollution. The plume is expected to reach Florida, Mexico and Texas, and then make its way up the eastern seaboard as the jet stream takes control.

On June 16, 2020, the GOES-East satellite captured this GeoColor imagery of an expansive plume of dust from the Sahara Desert traveling westward across the Atlantic Ocean. The dust is expected to reach the Caribbean later this week, and may even make it to parts of the United States next week.

As I understand it these dust plumes also suppress hurricane development, which is fine by me. As for the bronchial problems, just another good reason to wear a mask these daze.
