Cool Asteroid 7 Iris Opposes Sun 2020 JUN 28

Asteroid 7 Iris currently rises in the evening as the sky darkens. It will appear within Sagittarius in opposition to the Sun on 2020 JUN 28 at magnitude +8.9.

Iris is a stony asteroid with a mean diameter of 199 km. It was discovered in 1847.

An Iris chart and ephemeris can be found on my Asteroids webpage at https://www.CurtRenz.com/asteroids.html

Photos and descriptions of Iris would be welcome additions to this thread.

Last Saturday, I observed (7) Iris in my 11' SCT, along with (2) Pallas, (3) Juno, and (6) Hebe, Jupiter and Saturn, a couple comets, plus a bunch of deep sky stuff. Our club uses a site in Kings Canyon National Park at an elevations of about 6300 ft. We usually get excellent transparency and good to excellent seeing, although on Saturday it took a while after sunset for the air to stabilize.

I have a long-time friend from college named Iris. I should tell her I saw her asteroid. I need a way to say that elegantly. :-)
