In case anyone missed the sad news, here is a thread about Mike. Lists of Mike's stories may be found in post #42 and post #43. It was great knowing you, Mike. Take care.
Happy Birthday Mike!
Well have you managed to light a fire now Mike? I hope every thing is going well for you.
Sounds intense - but rewarding. I hope the successes continue for you. Cheers.
I enjoyed the workshop immensely, came back with easily half a dozen story ideas, made a bunch of varied and fantastic new friends and got my drivel personally reviewed by writers like Michael Bishop, Maureen McHugh, Graham Joyce and Ian MacDonald. It was mentally and physically draining a well; after five weeks I was barely able to rub two sentences together to make a fire. That sixth week was tough.
Wish I'd written what ABR wrote. Regarding your writing, I didn't see any further references to the Clarion West Writers Workshop (though it would be easy for me to miss the posts). I've been curious, how did that turn out?
Congratulations and condolences on the retirement. I hope you are able to spend more time writing and doing other fun things now. Continued success on the health front. This world is a much more pleasant place, in my opinion, with you in it. And let me say WOW! -- three sales now! Keep up the good work. ABR.
Thank you, everyone. An uneventful six-oh. For those not notified, my first fiction story was published in the July/August issue of the Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction to favorable reviews. There will be another story in the November/December issue. And I sold a story to a forthcoming anthology (dates not yet firm) called Welcome to the Greenhouse, theme of global climate change. I've taken disability retirement; three years ago I learned I had metastatic prostate cancer. The chemotherapy has been working well but the side effects of the therapy (mostly neuropathy in the hands and feet, slowly progressing numbness) make it impossible for me to do the work I was doing. And my short-term memory plays tricks from time to time. I'm fairly hale if not too hearty and I expect to hang around for quite a while. In the meantime expect more bad movie titles, more untrue facts, and odd extrapolations on the life and times of ferrets.
Late to the party. . . hope it was a happy birthday!
Happy Birthday Mike, I hope you have a good one.
