Transfer from memory card to stickdrive took a while, but here are my pictures from Space Camp 2009! Being there during the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11, history did indeed feel closer and more personal. The past was ever-present.
  1. This painting of Mars-bound explorers on the surface of Deimos or Phobos is by the security desk that we had to pass when we got on a bus to go to...
  2. Another really great work of art, dandelion seeds turning into fireflies and then the stars of the Milky Way. (Given the dandelions, if the little...
  3. A T-38 Talon airplane near the Aviation Challenge lake. Story Musgrave called planes like this his "beauties" in the speech he gave us a few days...
  4. The Huntsville Times reprinted all of its vintage Apollo 11 coverage, and someone hung this front page up near the nurse's office (Called Sick Bay.)
  5. It's easy to miss, but the space center also has a lot of really great art on display. I snapped this picture of Yuri Gagarin and the Vostok while we...
  6. On the Mid Deck, getting a briefing with the other Mission Specialists. The Mid Deck is where we sit during launch, store our gear, and suit up for...
  7. Once we're suited up, this hatch leads to Enterprise's payload bay. (There's also a Spacehab, but it's not used any more for reasons of accuracy.)
  8. Enterprise's payload bay as seen from the aft windows of the Flight Deck. The CanadArm that my friend Maycie rode on for our spacewalk can be seen...
  9. That's Dr. Georg von Tiesenhausen, one of the few surviving original German rocketeers. For somebody who's 96, he's got a lot of energy, especially...
  10. Here's where it all happens, the flight deck of the shuttle simulator Enterprise, where Team Holderer's Pilot and Commander are practicing their...
  11. Don't worry, Saturn I, I think you're just as pretty as your big brother.
  12. This was where I stayed, along with the other Holderer girls. As you can see, they don't change the sponsor names over the doors.
  13. The Saturn V is just THAT big.
  14. Some of the space center's early rockets, including Juno, Jupiter-C, and Mercury-Redstone. The Mercury-Redstone looks like its all dressed up for the...
  15. A fellow New Yorker- the LEM was made on Long Island.
  16. One Small Step...
  17. This is the famous Saturn V model rocket that made history a few months ago as the largest model rocket ever launched.
  18. The Ares V is going to be GIANT.
  19. A glove from a moonsuit. Good thing I had my camera "handy".
  20. This went to the MOON! It's the Apollo 16 Command Module, Casper.
  21. Inside of the restored Mobile Quarantine Facility where they kept the astronauts to screen for moon germs. The accommodations are pretty decent.
  22. Now, I don't know if "NASA" is counted as a proper name, in which case it wouldn't be fair in Scrabble...
  23. The beds in the Mobile Quarantine Facility. So 70s it hurts.
  24. "We are family, I've got all my sisters and me..."
  25. This display is called The Force, and you stand on a pad that shakes while playing the sounds of an F-1 engine igniting. If it was any more...
